With work to offload books and other equipment now complete, the ship has returned to Keppel Bay. The Doulos community is now reduced to around 70 people. A ‘final crew’ of 35 will remain on board until the vessel has been sold and delivered and the aim is for that to be completed by 31 March, when current certificates expire. Up to now, no contract has yet been signed to sell the ship, despite reports to the contrary, but negotiations are ongoing to secure the preservation of the ship. The only alternative would be scrapping the vessel, but should this be necessary, the organisation’s Board has stipulated that this be done according to environmental as well as occupational health and safety standards.
