Professionals - Serving Opportunities

In order for our ships to be able to sail from port to port, we need both those willing to join for one or two years to serve where needed as well as professionals that fill specific roles on board. Opportunities exist for personnel with skills such as deck and engineering officers and ratings, doctors, cooks, electricians, plumbers, welders, fitters, toolmakers, carpenters, bookkeepers, journalists, photographers, designers, information technology and audio visual professionals. Participants who join to use their professional skills are also given opportunity to participate in a broad spectrum of ship community and public events.



Current Openings

Below is a list of some specific positions we currently need to fill, both on board our ship as well as based on shore. These openings require personnel with relevant training and/or experience. We also have openings available on our ship for people who just want to serve in whatever capacity is needed. Please note: All opportunities on this site are unsalaried. Most people joining OM Ships have to raise financial support to cover their living expenses, usually through gifts from home churches and other supporters.

Description:
Logos Hope is known as the world's largest floating bookfair and sails from port to port sharing knowledge, help and hope.

We are looking for qualified marine engineers to help keep the ship sailing.

Required Qualifications:
STCW III/1 Marine Engineering
STCW V/3 Crisis Management and Human Behaviour

Requirements:
In Port
Work under the leadership of the 1st Engineer and taking full responsibility for maintenance work performed on assigned machinery. 
Perform on-call day and night duties as stipulated by the 1st Engineer in the Engineer’s Duty Roster. Whilst performing such duties, he shall ensure that the Watch keeping Motormen conduct their watches efficiently and are fully aware of their responsibilities and that any particular work given to them by the 1st Engineer is completed satisfactorily. He shall also answer any calls from the Watch keepers for advice or assistance.
Ensure that all records of maintenance, running hours and spares are entered into the computerised planned maintenance and stores system for the equipment under his care.

At Sea
.1 Performing watch keeping duties in the various machinery spaces as required by the Chief Engineer and to be responsible to him for the safe and efficient operation of all machinery and systems in his care.
.2 Ensure that the various Machinery Spaces logbooks are filled in correctly to the requirements of the Chief Engineer.
.3 As necessary, complete the various checks indicated on the sailing and arrival in port checklists.

Emergency Responsibilities

Carry out duties as assigned on the Emergency Station Bill. 
Participating in emergency drills, including Fire and Abandon Ship, and other ISM required training and drills.

Description:
As a Carpenter, you work as part of the Maintenance team who is responsible for maintaining adequate and comfort living and working conditions all around the ship. This includes safe and functional interior and furnishing in private, public and work areas, working sanitary spaces, managing fresh and waste water, air conditioning and ventilation, cold spaces, maintain routine check on various equipment and spaces.

Requirements:
What will be your tasks and responsibilities in this role?

• You are responsible of functionality and safety of all indoor areas around the ship by repairing, refitting and modifying existing structures according to different requests. For e.g. walls, ceilings, floors and other surfaces, doors and furniture includes to your area.
• You work as a part of maintenance team and you are responsible to Accommodation Maintenance engineer.
What are the requirements (skills/competences) for this role?

• You have practical skills and technical understanding and you can use common hand tools and electric tools to fix existing or to fabricate new furniture and structure.
• You have preferably some level of technical education.
• Earlier experience is required.

Working with the Maintenance team on board you will be responsible for:
• Domestic water systems throughout the vessel: fresh water lines, black and grey waste water systems, drainage systems, certain hydraulic and refrigeration systems.
• Working under the leadership of the vessel’s Accommodation Maintenance Engineering Officer, responsibilities include the maintenance of wash rooms; vacuum toilet systems; water supply, use and drainage in the galley etc.

Job Requirement:
• You have qualifications and several years of experience as a plumber.
• You are able to work independently and have experience in working with threaded fittings, small diameter copper and steel pipes, plastic piping, brazing and soldering, crimped fittings, etc.
• You have problem-solving skills and you are manually skilled.
• You have the ability to work with a small team and contribute to the overall project goals regarding personal and environmental safety, efficiency and quality.
• Good English ability, both in spoken and written form.

On the job training will be provided as needed.

Serve on board Logos Hope with an international crew of 400 volunteers from over 60 different countries.

We are looking for a qualified nurse to provide on board medical care and treatment for crew & guests under the direction of the ship’s physician.

Description:
In our team, we oversee Sound Lighting and video support for the public events and programs run on board and onshore as well as for the internal programs aboard MV Logos Hope. Additionally we are responsible for all deck 4 audio and video systems, and all meeting rooms’ audio and video systems.

Requirements:
What will be your tasks and responsibilities in this role?

• You are responsible for the AV side of events on board, community events, training services and general maintenance of equipment;
• You work closely with onboard events team coordinators, people development members and worship bands;
• You are the one who uses your knowledge and experience to help ship’s company as far as possible with any AV requests;
• You coordinate specific arrangements and design of lights, sound and video for events;
• You will need to have the basic understanding of how to operate all AV equipment and you will recieve further guidance and knowledge in this area;
• You will be performing in a team but you will need to be self motivated and able to teach yourself on a technical level in Lights, Video or Sound.
 
What are the requirements (skills/competences) for this role?

• You have experience with operating sound systems, light systems and video systems in live events (church, school programs etc.);
• You are willing to learn with the resources you are provided with and you will take iniative to further your understanding in one specific AV field;
• You have to be FAT: Flexible, Adaptable and Teachable;
• You are proactive to learn and also to teach others;
• You understand not only that the role demands good time management but also that it involves that you are able to work well on your own;

To perform skilled maintenance, repair and inspection work on Logos Hope’s complex refrigeration & HVAC equipment.

Requirements:
-Experience and training with refrigeration systems.

-Ability to read technical plans and fault find.
-Ability to work with hands and use power tools.

• Ensuring the proper maintenance of Main Engines and auxiliaries in order that the equipment keeps working and is up to the required standard
• Support the First Engineer Operations and Marine Operations team on board in order to help ensure a balanced workload

• Valid Seafarer’s Medical Certificate in compliance with ILO/IMO Guidelines

All certificates should have been revalidated within the last 5 years

Description:
The INT team supports the onboard crew with INT functions aboard the MV Logos Hope and ensures the systems required to perform those functions are available and functioning correctly.

Requirements:
More Information:
• You will provide end user support to the business users on the ship. Ensuring their issues are solved and the user is trained/communicated with in any preventative measures for the future.
• You will be responsible for managing people’s accounts and the creation of, as well as ensuring our security policies are adhered to.
• You will monitor all INT hardware and software to ensure its proper function. Correcting any problems that arise as a matter of priority.
• You will be ‘on duty’ on a regular schedule and will be required to respond to INT emergencies out of hours. You will also be responsible for checking all regularly scheduled activities have taken place eg Backup systems.
• You will provide support, as appropriate, for people’s personal devices and be involved in the education and training of people in the use of the INT systems.
• You will also be assigned projects and be able to contribute ideas for the improvement and development of the ships systems.

Requirements:
• You will regularly be dealing with people and will need to be patient, friendly and approachable to them.
• You are a good team player, willing to help one another and share information freely.
• Flexibility, particularly around working hours, will be essential. Appreciating the urgency of a job and the priorities that may need to be altered is very important. 
• You are well acquainted with the Microsoft Windows operating system, ideally multiple versions. A significant bonus is experience of networking or the Windows Server architecture.
• You are able to follow policies and procedures precisely and recognise any changes that may have an impact outside of your particular task.
• You will seek the guidance of your colleagues and INT Manager whenever you are uncertain, recognising the power you have to impact the ships ministry by your mistakes.

Description:
Use your special ability to inform and inspire through storytelling with the written word and be a part of the OM Ships team sharing knowledge, help and hope.
Working with the Marketing and Communications team on board and on shore, you will be responsible for:
- Researching, interviewing and writing finished stories and text materials for web and print use.
- Writing, editing and proof reading text for other projects.
- Archiving written materials.

Requirements:
- A creative team player with ability to manage multiple projects at any given time.
- Relevant qualification and/or a proven track record in journalism or similar.
- Ability to work to regular deadlines.
- Excellent English ability, both in spoken and written form. (Spanish fluency would be an added benefit.)
- A team of supporters who will ensure your financial sponsorship while with the Ship Ministry.

Working with the Electrical team on board you will be responsible for:
• Fulfilling the on-going maintenance and repair for our vessel
• Carrying out domestic installations, motor installations and installation of automation sensors as part of a continuous programme of upgrading
• Working in areas could involve work on the following machinery and systems: generators, switchboard up to 1000V, motors, control systems, public address system, fire alarm system, bridge & navigation equipment, computerised systems i.e. AutoCAD, planned maintenance system (AMOS) and PLC (Siemens S7) Programming


Job Requirement:
• Qualifications and experience with Electronic and control systems, motor control systems, cable installation & heavy duty wiring, generators and switchboards, maintenance, commissioning and fault finding.
• You have problem-solving skills and manual dexterity.
• You have the ability to work in a small team and are able to contribute to the overall goals of upgrading, maintaining and operating the various electrical and electronic systems on board.
• You are able to read and understand Technical drawings, manuals and documents.
• Good English ability, both in spoken and written form.

Description:
If you are interested in short-term work with OM Ships International, then take the next STEP! Usually around three to four months, this programme gives participants a taste of world-wide service in a multicultural environment.

Requirements:
Community Life

Living in a community of 400 from around 50 different countries is both a rewarding experience and a challenge. You may be sharing a cabin with up to nine other people, and will have limited space and privacy. However, you will find great opportunities within this to build deep friendships, and, as well, to interact with local people in port communities, both informally and through organised programmes and teams.

Practical Work

You will work eight hours a day, five days a week in one of our work departments, such as the galley (kitchen), cleaning or book fair teams. While work clothes and training will be provided on board, you will need to bring along willing hands to serve wherever you are needed! Along with a five day work week, a sixth day is designated for ministry or training opportunities.

Spiritual Growth

Our hope is that every person on board deepens their relationship with God, and learns how to apply and share their faith in a relevant way. Community activities, such as morning devotions, study groups and prayer times, are all designed with this goal in mind. As well, you will have access to training and resources such as teaching mp3s and DVDs.

Description:
Exists to purchase electrical supplies, give adequate support and manage easily accessible information in order to ensure proper functioning of the electrical team on board and the technical team on shore.

In your role you will support the Electrical Manager and the marine operations team on shore in order to help ensure a balanced workload and visit the ship on request in order to support the onboard team. You will manage technical drawings and documentation for the electrical team in order to have up to date, relevant and easily accessible information available. You will ensure the Amos data management system is kept up to date with necessary information for accurate history and data management in order to efficiently support the purchasing and maintenance process. You will purchase and manage the ordering process of electrical and electronic spare parts, consumables and equipment for the whole ship till delivery at HQ in order to ensure these can be shipped on time.
 
Your profile
You are a European and preferably have previous ship experience, ideally in the electrical team. You have experience in electrical planning and installation in a commercial setting. You have an Electrical/technical educational or experiential background. You have the ability to write and speak in English and German. You are competent in computer literate, especially in MS office, AutoCad and Amos. You take initiative and responsibility. You build effective relationships and you motivate people.

What we offer
You will be based in Mosbach, Germany. It is a full time role. You will be part of an international team who are passionate about serving in the ships ministry.  Coaching and training will be arranged to grow into this role, when needed.

Description:
Exists to manage key finance functions which are largely based in Florence and to ensure financial accounting support is provided as needed for good stewardship to  support the ministry meeting its mission and vision in a way that honors God.

Requirements:
-Degree level training in Accounting
-One or two years experience in financial accounting
-Understanding of basic accounting software and Microsoft programs (Excel, Outlook, etc)
-Loves God and has a heart for the ministry. Lives a godly life, shows a godly example.
-Wiling to serve. Sees leadership as a service. Puts all leadership tasks within the perspective of serving people.

Description:
Handle needed supplies and manage the timely shipment of all on shore purchases in order to help ensure continued operations of the ship.

In your role you will support the technical- and project managers and marine operations team on shore in order to help ensure a balanced workload. You will purchase and manage the ordering process of technical spare parts, consumables and equipment for deck and engine till delivery at HQ in order to ensure these can be shipped on time. You will manage the logistic process in order to ensure all freights and shipments will arrive at the destination on time. You will ensure proper and relevant documentation and filing in order to allow for smooth shipments and VAT reclaims. You will manage the store room in order to have a safe working place and accurate and timely shipment of purchases. You will ensure the Amos data management system is kept up to date with necessary information for accurate history and data management in order to efficiently support the purchasing and maintenance process.
 
Your profile
You are a European and preferably have previous ship experience, ideally in the marine operation team. You have a technical background and experience in purchasing and logistics.  You have the ability to write and speak in English and German. You have knowledge about legal and tax requirements regarding Import/export. You are competent in computer literate, especially in MS office and desirably in Amos. You take initiative and responsibility. You build effective relationships and you motivate people.

• Welding experience preferably in marine environment with expert knowledge in SMAW (stick), GMAW (MIG) and TIG welding techniques.
• Holder of certificate for plate and pipe welding.
• Knowledge and experience in the use of electric tools, heating torch, plasma cutter, pipe bending machine, threading machine, etc. and with pre- and post- welding heat treating processes
• Problem-solving skills and manual dexterity.
• Preferably having good fitting experience and skills.
• You have the ability to work with a small team and contribute to the overall project goals regarding personal and environmental safety, efficiency and quality.
• Good English ability, both in spoken and written form.

Description:
Are you looking to improve your English speaking skills as well as serving God?
The English Immersion Program provides lessons in a small group setting as well as one on one tutoring. While in this three month program, students are given service opportunities. This provides English conversation practice with staff and volunteers.
Your ministry training will take place at the Morris Literature Ministry Centre. You will have the opportunity to participate in the OM Ships Florence team life.

Requirements:
OM Ships International is now offering a unique English Immersion Program in Florence, South Carolina in the USA.
The English Immersion Program is primarily designed to help
applicants to the Ship Ministry reach the level of English language ability required to serve on board Logos Hope.
This program is unlike other English language programs in that it utilizes skill-based training tailored to help each participant achieve English fluency.
The English Immersion Program provides lessons in a small group setting as well as one on one tutoring. While in this three month program, students are given service opportunities. This provides English conversation practice with staff and volunteers.
Your ministry training will take place at the Ministry Center in Florence where OM Ships receives, sorts and sends out literature to the ship Logos Hope and around the world. Field trips also take place to give participants real world applications to practice their English.

Description:

Our international team in Florence, South Carolina of about 30 people support the Logos Hope through the Communications department, Partner development and Literature distribution.

The Volunteer Coordinator exists to coordinate individuals, churches and groups as they become actively involved in the ministry through volunteer service.

Requirements:
1. Volunteer Program
Coordinate and facilitate the receiving, daily scheduling, task management, data basing and follow-up of volunteers in order to ensure the effectiveness of the Volunteer Program.
Core activities
1. Maintain accurate records of volunteer service, name, address, birthdays, etc. 
2. Coordinate the receiving of individuals or groups into OMSI’s volunteer program.
3. Schedule all volunteers into the calendar and relay availability to Literature Operations Manager or Facility Manager as appropriate.
4. Coordinate volunteer accommodation needs with the Florence Personnel Officer.
5. Work alongside the volunteers as time permits.
The priority for assigning volunteers is to the Literature team (approx. 40/day) but a few volunteers are also needed to assist with maintenance/yard work on a regular basis and occasionally in the office. Volunteers should be assigned according to their interest and skill set, bearing these priorities in mind.
2. Volunteer Care
Assist in providing appropriate care for the volunteers in order to enable their service with OM Ships to be a blessing both to them and the ministry. 
Core activities
1. Screen potential volunteers and approve their involvement with OM Ships.
2. Orient volunteers to the ministry of OM Ships.
3. Invite volunteers to up for ministry news and appeals.
4. Encourage volunteers during their involvement with OM Ships.
5. Follow up with lapsed volunteers to ensure they are not lost to the ministry through lack of care.
3. Volunteer Recruitment
Ensure volunteer staffing of individuals and groups in order to facilitate the growth of the ministry.
Core activities
1. Research and create initiatives that would facilitate volunteer relationships and opportunities.
2. Proactively promote the opportunity for volunteers in the local Florence community and in other regions.
3. Train and resource our volunteers to promote the ministry to others and become OM Ships liaisons in their local church.

You’re service in picking and packing and help to see thousands of books go out to customers worldwide.

Requirements:
This is your opportunity to play an important part in sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ by helping in our Morris Literature Ministry Centre – receiving, sorting and packing Bibles and other literature for Logos Hope’s book fair, for sale on the internet or for shipping in bulk to book stores around the world. You will have the opportunity to participate in the OM Ships Florence team life and interact with our international OM missionary staff. You will also experience the American culture and possibly have the opportunity to visit one or two nearby cities (Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Charlotte).

Requirements:
The Logos Hope is in need of an experienced machinist to produce one offs and low volume parts for use on-board. You will report to the 1st Engineers and support the Engineering team on-board.
We have a well-equipped Machine Shop with several manual lathes, milling machine, press drills and hand power tools.
